My Cat Used to Spill Water All the Time — I Finally Figured Out Why

I used to think my cat was just being messy.

Every day, I’d come back and find water around the bowl.
Not a lot — but enough to notice.

At first, I blamed the bowl. Then I blamed her.

But after watching her more closely, I realized something different was happening.

She wasn’t just drinking.

She was playing with the water first.

Tapping it. Watching it move. Then drinking a little.

And if the surface didn’t move much… she would make it move.

Which meant — splashing.

That’s when it hit me.

Still water doesn’t give them feedback.
They want to see it move before trusting it.

So I tried something different.

I switched to a setup where the water naturally flows.

The first day, she didn’t spill anything.

She still tapped it… but didn’t need to create movement anymore.

And over time, the floor stayed dry.

It wasn’t a behavior problem.

She was just trying to understand the water.
