I Thought My Cat Was Just Picky — It Was Actually the Water
Share
For the longest time, I thought my cat was just… difficult.
She would walk up to her water bowl, sniff it, maybe take one or two sips — and then leave.

Meanwhile, she’d jump onto my desk and try to drink from my glass like it was the most interesting thing in the world.
At first, it was kind of funny.
Then it became frustrating.
I tried everything I could think of — moving the bowl, changing the bowl, refilling more often. Nothing really worked.
Until one small change made a difference.
I noticed something:
She was always more interested in moving water.

Not still water.
That got me thinking.
In the wild, still water isn’t always safe. Flowing water usually is.
Maybe this wasn’t about being picky at all — maybe it was instinct.
So I tested it.
I introduced a simple flowing water setup.
No big expectations.
But the reaction was immediate.
She didn’t hesitate.
No sniffing.
No walking away.
Just drinking.
That was the moment I realized —
I hadn’t been dealing with a picky cat.
I just didn’t understand what she was looking for.
