I Moved the Water Bowl Away From Food — And My Cat Finally Started Drinking
Share
I didn’t expect something this small to make a difference.
For months, I kept my cat’s water bowl right next to her food. It just felt convenient — one feeding spot, easy to clean, everything in one place. But I started noticing something odd: she would eat normally, then just walk away without drinking.

At first, I thought maybe she just wasn’t thirsty.
But then one evening, I moved the bowl across the room while cleaning. Nothing intentional — just temporary.
That night, she walked over… paused… and drank.
Not just a few licks — a full, proper drink.
That’s when I started looking into it, and apparently, many cats don’t like drinking near where they eat. It goes back to instinct — in the wild, water near food could mean contamination.
Since then, I’ve kept her water in a separate spot.

And honestly, it changed her habits almost immediately.
Later on, I also tried switching to a fountain — mostly out of curiosity — and I noticed she lingered even longer when drinking.
Not saying you need one right away.
But if your cat barely touches water, try changing the location first.
Sometimes the problem isn’t the water.
It’s where you put it.
